I look back on serving a 30-day course at Dhamma Padhāna as possibly the best 30 days of my (this) life so far. It was a truly invaluable experience, where I gained a lot of insight in myself, and learned to apply the technique on a much deeper level than before.

The learning curve that stood out the most to me is in relation to mettā, as well as to the insight in the changing nature of things/impermanence on different levels.

We had a hard and efficiently working team of six, so we could take time off every third day. This brought small variations in moods and states of mind, (for instance people were somewhat more sensitive the day after their day off meditating in silence, and more relaxed while back into the tasks the following day). The length of the time together made these fluctuations observable within myself and (from my perspective) also noticeable in others. It made my awareness of impermanence and anattā stronger, and empathy (mettā) appeared more naturally.

Naturally some personalities are more in line with ourselves than others, but I came to notice that even that is impermanent. Working for such an extended period of time with mettā (both during mettā sessions in the evenings as well as during service, when difficulties arose) meant that I truly came to love all of my kitchen colleagues equally.

Not only did serving a 30-day course help to strengthen my daily practice, I gained a lot of insight and (even more) willingness to keep practising to apply Dhamma in daily life.

I was very fortunate to be able to attend three 30-day courses over three years at Dhamma Padhāna: the first and last sitting, with the service in between. Working together to serve others in a small working environment (the temporary kitchen) certainly provided me with an opportunity to examine my own practice in action. And somehow, in the midst of occasionally intense group dynamics, Dhamma helped us all to serve the students smilingly, deepening our practice into the bargain.

I served a 30-day course in Dhamma Padhāna in December 2015. One probably should not and cannot evaluate the path in this way, but I often think of it as the most beneficial step I have made on the Dhamma path so far. It was, for sure, a wonderful experience.

Being sealed off from the world for 30 days, attending to the slow and peaceful routine of the Dhamma campus, watching the string of students queuing for their food, quiet, with their heads bowed; spending time between the meditation hall, the kitchen and the little ensuite room in which I slept, washed and read Dhamma books. I am definitely not ready to renounce striving and aspirations of lay life, but these 30 days were probably very close to what I imagine a monastic life would be, and—if I were to become a nun—it would be largely because of that service and its immense benefits.

Thirty days of working with the precepts of pure sīla, the practice of noble speech, and having more time than at the regular 10 days of service, but without the intensity of the 10-day course, resulted in more space and opportunity to take these practices deeper. Mr. Goenka very clearly teaches us that the practice of sīla is the very base of our whole practice. However, I still think that we see it more as an introduction, a necessary training before we can practise something that will give us really good results. I am convinced that the deeper practice of sīla, which is possible on a 30-day course, brings wonderful results itself.

My devotion to the practice of Vipassana comes mainly from the wonderful results I keep getting from it, but also from the intellectual understanding and fascination with the teaching of the Buddha, of which I come across confirmation all the time in daily life and practice. However, I notice more and more that there are things on the path that clearly have a profound effect on me, and that I cannot grasp, understand nor explain. Being for an extended period of time on Dhamma land, at Dhamma Padhāna in a closed off, pure atmosphere of Dhamma is one of those things.

One of the many wonderful things I experienced while serving is the practice of mettā. Apart from the reliable and comforting servers’ mettā sessions at the end of the day, I also often noticed how all the challenging negativities that appeared on the mind during the day of service—the annoyance or envy “towards” this or that fellow server—became more clearly balanced and often disappeared, overcome by the general positive feeling of really liking those faces in the kitchen, wishing them well and being grateful for yet another afternoon with them (or—at last—a day off!). A longer course gives an opportunity to experience this “liking” even deeper, and to observe the challenging animosities arising… (and passing).

Over and above all I experienced the feeling of gratitude for the place, the opportunity and the technique. The entire campus, I felt, was made out of people’s kindness and goodwill. It was visible in detailed instructions in the kitchen, carefully designed spaces and routines, the pillow under my head and the heads of so many people every night, but also in the hard and patient work of the students whom we were serving.

Every single step we take on the path is wonderful, beneficial and important; spending 30 days serving on a Dhamma course is a step full of impact that I recommend to everyone, at any opportunity.

May all beings be happy.
